RISK FACTOR ELEVATED STROKE RISK INCIDENCE IN THE POPULATION
Excessive Alcohol Consumption Excessive alcohol consumption is linked to rising blood pressure and obesity. Binge drinking can double the risk of ischemic stroke and increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke 2-3 fold. Acceptable consumption levels are :<1-2 drinks per day (maximum of 9 for women and 14 for men per week. About 7% of Ontarians age 45 and older drink at an unhealthy level.
Overweight Being overweight increases risk of stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
Among women, stroke risk increases with increasing Body Mass Index and weight gain after 18.
Up to 46% of adult population of Ontario is classified as being overweight.
Sedentary Lifestyle Sedentary lifestyle also contributes to other stroke risk factors, e.g. high blood pressure, becoming over-weight, diabetes and heart disease.
Physical activity has a protective effect for both sexes.
Over half (59%) of Ontario aged 45 and over is inactive.
Smoking Smoking increases the risk of stroke two to six times, most strongly in people under age 55.
Second hand smoke doubles the risk for stroke.
17% of Ontarians over 45 smoke. Stopping smoking reduced stroke risk within 2-4 years.
