| RISK FACTOR | ELEVATED STROKE RISK | INCIDENCE IN THE POPULATION |
| Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis | Individuals with atherosclerosis, over 5 years have 11% risk for stroke. | No accurate estimate of incidence. |
| Atrial Fibrillation | Individuals with atrial fibrillation have 3-5 times greater risk for ischemic stroke. | 3% of population aged 45+ has atrial fibrillation 5.9% by age 65 and over. After age 55, the incidence of atrial fibrillation doubles with each decade of life. |
| Cholesterol | High cholesterol: Doubles the risk of ischemic stroke. Increases the risk of heart disease that is an independent risk factor for stroke. |
Nearly half of all Canadians have some type of problem with elevated cholesterol. Screening for elevated cholesterol should be done for anyone with:
|
| Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) or Ischemic Heart Disease | HD: Doubles the risk of ischemic stroke and Increases the risk of developing atherosclerosis and increases the risk for blood clots. |
10% of Ontarians aged 45 and over, report some form of heart disease. |
| Diabetes | Diabetics have 1.5-2.5 greater risk for ischemic stroke. Diabetes is strongly correlated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and being overweight. |
About 7% of Ontarians over age 45 have been identified as being diabetic. |
| Family History of Stroke and/or CVD | There is support for an inheritable component to stroke. | Having a parent or sibling with stroke prior to age 65, increases risk of stroke by 70%. |
| High Blood Pressure (HBP) | Untreated HBP increases the risk of stroke 3-4 times. Treatment of HBP can reduce strokes by 38% and fatal strokes by 40%. |
22% of Canadian adults have HBP and HBP appears to increase with age, weight, alcohol use, diabetes. 33% are not treated and not controlled. |
| Previous Stroke | Approximately 25% of stroke survivors have another stroke within 5 years. | Over 20,000 strokes each year in Ontario and close to 115,000 people living with stroke. |
| Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) |
Risk of stroke for individuals with TIA:
|
Although it is difficult to estimate the incidence of TIA's since possibly only 10-25% of patients who experience a TIA are admitted to hospital, the current estimate for the Ontario population is 6,300 per year. |
