The Ottawa Hospital was designated as a Regional Stroke Centre by the Ministry of Health in 2003. The designation of Regional Stroke Centres was part of a MOH comprehensive stroke strategy that started in 2000 and had a 4 year implementation plan with an investment of $30 million dollars a year. At that time, there were six existing stroke centres across the province located in Hamilton Health Sciences Centre, London Health Sciences Centre, Trillium Health Centre, St. Michael's Hospital, Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre, and Kingston General Hospital.
The focus of the strategy is to improve stroke care through systems change, public awareness and professional education that covers the continuum of care. The goal is to ensure that residents of Champlain receive evidence based care that reduces the burden of stroke in terms of incidence, impact and mortality.
